August’s Employees of the Month at Strategic

Every month, the employees at Strategic Communications are given the opportunity to acknowledge exemplary colleagues within or outside their department. Three individuals were chosen by their coworkers for their commitment to customer service, perseverance in the face of challenges, and can-do attitudes!

Sarah Shawhan | Accounts Receivable

• How long have you worked for Strategic Communications?

On April 24, it will be six months

• What was your background prior to working for Strategic Communications?

The majority of my professional background is in Marketing/Business Administration, and I also worked in Residential Real Estate for about three years.

• What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding or fulfilling?

I love receiving data and giving it structure. This is the first role I’ve held where this aspect of business is my primary job function and I absolutely love it!

• What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

Never be afraid to make a change, even if it means starting over. The time will pass anyway.

• Outside of work, what are you passionate about/enjoy doing?

I have twelve chickens and I completely adore eleven of them! I also enjoy spending time outside taking care of my flower garden.

• What is your current favorite TV Show, Podcast, or Book that you’d like to share with the world?

Ted Lasso and Schitt’s Creek are my favorite TV Shows. I also gravitate towards terrible reality TV shows (think train wrecks)

• What is something that people may not know about you?

I have identical twin brothers who are both Career Army. They both received Silver Stars on the same day while serving in Iraq in 2003 (commanding two different missions), both Purple Heart recipients (each caught shrapnel in their right knee) and both are Army Rangers. Dave served 29 years, retiring in May of 2022 as a U.S. Army Colonel and now serves as director of the U.S. Army Geospatial Center. Dan is a current Brigadier General serving as the commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, South Atlantic Division. I am extremely proud of them, and their service to our country.

Matthew Witt | IT Support Associate

• How long have you worked for Strategic Communications?

Right after high school I took an internship Strategic offered me and I worked here for about 3 months during the summer of 2017. I rejoined the team in 2022 and have been here for about 2 and a half years.

• What was your background prior to working for Strategic Communications?

Academically, in 2017, I took the internship in order to see if Information Technology would be something that I would be interested in as a career. I was about to attend WKU to pursue a degree in Physical Therapy and really wanted to get hands-on experience, if I could, with IT and this was a great place to do so

What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding or fulfilling?

Honestly, I think wherever somebody chooses to work, it’s always going to come down to the people you work with to some degree. And that’s perfect for me, because I enjoy working with every single person in this company and being able to communicate with them and assist in any way that I can. It’s honestly a pleasure.

• What is the best career lesson you’ve learned so far?

I would say the best lesson that I’ve learned so far is to make sure to always stay on your toes and be vigilant

• Outside of work, what are you passionate about/enjoy doing?

I’m a nerd. I like games, skateboarding, enjoying/playing music, messing around with electronics and IT stuff like fixing computers and working on cars, etc.

What is your current favorite TV Show, Podcast, or Book that you’d like to share with the world?

Better Call Saul is probably one of my all-time favorite shows. That’s a show that has a lot of mental meat and cheese to pull apart and really enjoy. And it’s long! I don’t really read, which I’d like to get into so I’m open to any suggestions

• What is something that people may not know about you?

A while back I picked up a hobby of video editing. Honestly it died off, because I couldn’t afford the software, but I really enjoyed it. I started because I wanted to capture my weight loss journey. Started a “Fitsta” and everything it was embarrassing looking back on it, but I really enjoyed it. Like really enjoyed it!

Eric Heck | Contracts Administrator

• How long have you worked for Strategic Communications?

I was hired in June 2020, and boy am I glad!!!

• What is the best career lesson learned so far?

Always try to improve yourself and learn new things to make yourself more desirable and lethal as an employee

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

My family. That’s all that really matters to me

• What has been your biggest accomplishment on our team?

That’s a hard one. Would be a tie between streamlining all the Internal Quote Templates and TR processes for the various contracts and the move/update to Tableau for all the Sales reporting.

If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Jesus…he loves me (agape: complete, unconditional love) which I don’t deserve.

What is your current favorite TV Show, Podcast, or Book that you’d like to share with the world?

I am a National Treasure franchise fan, currently watching National Treasure: Edge of History, an enjoyable continuation of the movie storylines with mostly all new characters.
