The American Cancer Society recently held their annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in downtown Louisville. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people from all walks of life came together to support finding a cure for this disease. The 40-degree weather was no deterrent, as teams of walkers sported shirts and signs for their loved ones who were suffering or have perished at the hands of the disease. It was really an incredible sight!
Breast cancer has made a terrible impact on many families. The mental and emotional toll it has taken on them and their families can’t be described in words. I have known close friends who have had family members afflicted by breast cancer. Even one of my co-workers was diagnosed and has been fighting this disease for months. When I heard that Strategic Communications was taking part in the walk, I jumped at the opportunity to help make a difference.
I was humbled to be a part of the Strategic Communications group walking as the team “Melissa’s Mammary Supporters”, in honor of our co-worker. We made sure to dress warm for the cold weather and sported our custom t-shirts that were made and sponsored by Phoenix Business Systems. In speaking to other volunteer walkers, it gave me an idea of how many people in the Louisville area alone have been impacted by breast cancer.
It was heart-breaking, yet inspiring to see people affected by this disease come together and show a unity for a great cause. It just goes to show you the human spirit can endure just about anything. The walk raised a good amount of money and brought more attention to finding a cure for breast cancer. I truly believe that if we continue to come together for finding a cure for this disease, we will ultimately succeed!
